The Power of Mentoring: Difference-Maker Laura Sedo

There are so many ways to make a difference in your community – helping out at your local food pantry, raking leaves for a neighbor, picking up trash in your local park, or even mentoring someone. As we continue to celebrate Miron Construction Make a Difference Week, we’re excited to share the story of outstanding volunteer Laura Sedo, who has served as a mentor with the Outagamie County Mentoring Program for 8 years.

The Outagamie County Mentoring Program pairs youth ages in need of positive role models with caring adult mentors who offer guidance, consistency, and encouragement. The program focuses on helping youth ages 6-17 develop healthy coping skills, improve school performance, and build confidence, while also preparing those in Child Welfare and Juvenile Justice programs for successful futures.

Mentors like Laura provide individual attention and introduce youth to new, positive experiences that enhance self-esteem, social skills, and decision-making — ultimately empowering them to lead productive and fulfilling lives.

A staff member from Outagamie County shared:

“Laura brings joy and positivity to kids’ lives. She reminds them that they matter, and she is always there to support them.”

Research shows that having even one caring, dependable adult can make a profound difference in a young person’s life. That one connection can boost confidence, improve academic outcomes, and inspire hope for the future.
