Threads of Kindness: Barb Ketter Makes a Difference

As we continue our celebration of service during the Miron Construction Make a Difference Week, we’re thrilled to uplift the dedicated service and talents of Barb Ketter, one of our Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) participants.

Volunteering isn’t just a way to pass time for Barb Ketter – it’s a lifestyle. Over the years she has volunteered for many different nonprofits, including Loaves and Fishes, Community Child Care Center, and our Hooks and Needles program. Since joining RSVP in 2017, Barb has logged a an impressive 2,300 hours!

In addition to giving generously of her time, Barb also uses her special talent for sewing to create “fidget mats” for St. Paul Elder Services in Kaukauna. These therapeutic fabric mats or blankets are designed to occupy restless hands, stimulate the mind through touch and texture, and help individuals develop or maintain fine motor skills. Barb makes the mats using materials like zippers, snaps, buttons, and Velcro. She incorporates various textures to create pockets and interactive elements for hands-on activity.

Barb shared:

“I started making fidget mats about 3 years ago for the memory care unit in assisted living centers…I try to make 3 or 4 each month.  I have always enjoyed sewing and this gives me an opportunity to be creative.”

Barb has crafted over 180 fidget mats. Over the years she’s also used her sewing skills to make bibs for the Community Child Care Center. (Check out our 2018 post for more on Barb’s passion for child care.)

Barb is a shining example of how using our unique talents and compassion can truly make a difference in the lives of others. Thank you Barb!
